Howl at the Moon takes the term "piano bar" to new heights, with the piano players offering up witty discourse while encouraging the audience to "sing-along" to songs almost everyone knows by heart. Anyone who delights in good music will have a wonderful experience. Howl at the Moon strives to keep their shows fresh with a mainstream and recognizable format that allows their typical customer to sing along with 90% of the songs.
Every staff member of the Howl at the Moon is involved with entertaining guests. There are staff "ShowTime" routines at the bar or on stage, and some (with talent) even perform with the piano players.
Howl at the Moon is a place where you'll find "friends you have not met yet," with everyone drawn together by the camaraderie and nostalgia to form one large, synergistic party, swaying to the music, bellowing out familiar lyrics.
It's a place for a good time - for traveling business people and conventioneers in search of local color, and for people of all ages and occupations in the community. Although there are regulars, you will never find exactly the same people at "Howl" on any given night. The "Howl" is a hot spot for birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor, and bachelorette parties.
Howl at the Moon is a highly successful dueling piano concept that has grown to eleven locations since its inception in 1990. By providing its customers with an outstanding entertainment experience reminiscent of the best of New Orleans, Howl at the Moon has attracted a diverse and loyal following in every market that it has entered. The focal point of the nightclub is a stage featuring a pair of baby grand pianos. The piano players are the ringmasters responsible for creating the excitement that characterizes a night at Howl at the Moon. These piano players are hand picked from the finest regional talent and are thoroughly trained to continually thrill and entertain the audience. Howl at the Moon's piano players take the stage two at a time. The entertainers play for one hour and then yield the stage to two new players. At the changeover, all four piano players stay on stage for what is known as a "four-way." The four-way occurs at the end of each hour and lasts for two to three songs. This hourly encore allows the piano players to incorporate additional instruments (drums, guitar, and saxophone) into the performance. The four-way raises the energy of the room and provides a defined transition between the piano player shifts.
Additionally, during every hour the Howl at the Moon entertainers engage in "Showtime." During this act, all Howl service employees join in and lead the audience through a choreographed routine to animated versions of popular tunes that include nostalgic TV shows and commercial jingles. The audience participation approaches 100% during Showtime and is enhanced by the high energy level of the live music.
Howl at the Moon is a total entertainment experience where the piano players and staff do not only entertain the guests; the guests become part of the show. The customers tend to be a diverse group comprised of guests of all ages. The regular clientele of Howl at the Moon is enhanced by traveling business people and conventioneers. The "dueling piano sing - a- long" format probably had its modern origins at Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans. The music of choice was Dixieland, 40's, and 50's music. The true roots surely go back further than that because as long as there has been at least one person to lead a song, there has almost always been someone to sing, or howl along.
Howl at the Moon is the evolution of this deceptively simple idea, smartly packaged for the 90's and the new Millennium.
The first Howl at the Moon opened in 1990, and was located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was an immediate hit, and led to a rapid expansion. Cleveland, Ohio, Orlando, and Columbus were soon to follow. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line recruited Howl at the Moon, where it delighted their ships' passengers for two years. National retail and entertainment zone developers that have recognized Howl's value for capturing foot traffic and complimenting other retail and entertainment facilities are now pursuing the Howl at the Moon brand. There are eleven Howl at the Moon locations nationwide, and Howl at the Moon is currently pursuing new locations.
